How Long to Get Level 20 in Valorant? AP Math (2026)

Valorant locks ranked until level 20. On the wiki's AP rates, it's about 17 hours over 17 days with a daily first win, nearly 50 hours without it.

Valorant won't let you queue Competitive until your account reaches level 20. Riot's support page: "you'll need to be at least Account Level 20 before gaining access to Competitive Mode" (Riot Games Support: Competitive Mode FAQ, updated May 17, 2026).

So how long does that take? Riot doesn't publish how many Account Points (AP) a match pays, so we took the rates the VALORANT Wiki documents and modelled every way of getting there. The answer depends far less on how much you play in a day than on how many days you play.

Fast answer: An hour of Spike Rush a day, with the daily first win banked, gets a new account to level 20 in about 17 days and 17 hours of matches. Four-hour sessions finish in 8 days but cost about 30 hours. One Unrated game a day takes 34 days. Skip the daily win bonus entirely and match time alone needs about 49 hours.

Key takeaways

  • Every level costs 5,000 AP, so level 1 to 20 is 95,000 AP.
  • AP per minute shrinks as you level: 50 a minute at levels 0 to 5, 20 a minute at levels 16 to 20.
  • The first win of the day pays 5,000 AP at levels 0 to 5. That's a whole level for one won game.
  • Short daily sessions beat marathons on total hours played. Marathons win on calendar days.
  • At level 20 you still owe placement games before you get a rank. Riot's Terms of Service cover every game on the account, and its anti-boosting penalties cover ranked play.

Why Does Valorant Make You Reach Level 20 First?

A glowing gate marked with the number 20 stands at the end of a neon corridor
Competitive unlocks at level 20Riot's rule since Episode 4

Level 20 is Riot's gate on fresh accounts. It went in with Episode 4, and players who had already played ranked before then kept their access whatever their level (Riot Games Support: Competitive Mode FAQ). A throwaway account has to spend those hours before it reaches the ranked ladder.

Account level measures how long you've played, and it has nothing to do with your rank. Riot's explainer says the AP behind it comes from matches, scaled by their length and result, and doesn't count toward your Battle Pass or Agent Contracts (VALORANT Account Leveling Explained). Only match time and wins move it, so better aim helps only through the wins it brings.

How Much AP Do You Need for Level 20?

You need 5,000 AP for every level (VALORANT Wiki: Account Level, last edited July 18, 2026). Counting from level 1, that's 19 levels and 95,000 AP.

AP comes from three places, and all three shrink as your level goes up. These rates come from the same wiki page. It's a community wiki, run by Weird Gloop rather than Riot, so treat them as the community's documented figures, not Riot's own:

Levels 0 to 5
First win of the day5,000 AP
Each match win250 AP
Time played50 AP a minute
Levels 6 to 10
First win of the day4,000 AP
Each match win200 AP
Time played40 AP a minute
Levels 11 to 15
First win of the day3,000 AP
Each match win150 AP
Time played30 AP a minute
Levels 16 to 20
First win of the day2,000 AP
Each match win100 AP
Time played20 AP a minute
Level 21 and up
First win of the day1,000 AP
Each match win50 AP
Time played10 AP a minute

Two details on that page matter for planning. The first-win bonus "resets every 22 hours", not at midnight. And time-based AP is paid "evenly for every 6 seconds of match time" (VALORANT Wiki: Account Level), so a match that runs long pays more and a quick stomp pays less.

The wiki doesn't list a different rate per mode. A minute of Spike Rush earns the same time AP as a minute of Unrated. What changes between modes is how many games, and so how many wins, you fit into an hour.

We modelled the climb from level 1 to 20 with the rates above. The assumptions, so you can check them: you win half your games, and a match lasts 35 minutes in Unrated or Competitive, 15 in Swiftplay and 10 in Spike Rush. Those lengths are our estimates, not Riot figures. We use expected values: at a 50% win rate, the daily bonus is banked half the time after one game, three times in four after two, and so on.

Read the table by hours and the short daily sessions win: the daily bonus pays the same lump whether you play 15 minutes or four hours. Read it by days and the long sessions win, at the cost of roughly 12 more hours of play.

Strip out the first-win bonuses and the win AP and match time alone comes to 2,958 minutes, or about 49 hours, roughly 30 hours more than the daily routine.

Why the First Win of the Day Matters So Much

A sunrise over a futuristic city with a gold badge glowing in the sky
One win, one level5,000 AP at levels 0 to 5

At levels 0 to 5, a single first win of the day is worth 5,000 AP, a full level (VALORANT Wiki: Account Level). To earn the same AP from time alone at that level you'd need 100 minutes of matches.

Count the bonus alone. One win a day covers levels 1 to 5 in 5 days (5,000 AP a day), 6 to 10 in about 6 (4,000), 11 to 15 in about 8 (3,000) and 16 to 20 in 10 (2,000). That's about 30 days of bonuses for the whole 95,000 AP, without a minute of time AP. The minutes you play on top shorten that month.

So the fastest route in hours is:

  1. Play every day, even if only briefly, until you win once.
  2. Use a short mode for that win. Spike Rush and Swiftplay give you more chances at a win per hour than a 35-minute Unrated game.
  3. Stop when the bonus is banked if your goal is hours, not days. Keep playing if you'd rather hit 20 sooner.
  4. Don't worry about the clock. The bonus resets every 22 hours, so playing at the same time each day never finds it still locked.

If you want ranked access by a specific date, such as the start of Act 6, work backwards from the table: 8 days is the fastest schedule we modelled (four hours a day), and two to three weeks of shorter sessions gets you there for less total time.

Which Mode Levels You Up Fastest?

The wiki lists one time-AP rate for every matchmade mode, so modes differ only in how many wins you fit into an hour:

  • Spike Rush is the quickest route to your first win of the day. It finished fastest in hours in our model, at about 17 hours with an hour a day.
  • Swiftplay is close behind and plays like a shortened Unrated game, so it's also practice for the mode you're unlocking.
  • Unrated is slowest in AP per hour once the daily bonus is banked, but it's the same game as Competitive. If you plan to rank well, those hours do double duty.
  • Deathmatch pays time AP like everything else, but a free-for-all has one winner per match, so it rarely gives you the daily win.

Custom games don't count. The wiki says AP comes from "playing and completing matchmade games" (VALORANT Wiki: Account Level).

If you're leveling a new account for ranked, Unrated still makes sense for part of the time. You'll meet the maps, agents and economy you're about to be ranked on. Our Valorant coaching guide for aim and game sense covers what to work on while you level.

What Happens When You Hit Level 20?

Rank emblems from Iron to Radiant glow in a row on a dark pedestal
Level 20 isn't a rank yetPlacement games come next

Reaching 20 unlocks the Competitive queue. It doesn't give you a rank. You still play placement games first.

Riot's support page says that at Act 1 and Act 4 of each Season, everyone plays five placement matches, and in the other Acts a player who already had a rank plays one (Riot Games Support: Act Ranks and Rewards). The single-game rule is for players who earned a rank in the previous Act (Competitive Changes: 2.02 and what's next), so a brand-new account should plan for five.

The highest rank you can be placed into is Ascendant 3. Patch 11.00 raised it from Ascendant 1 (VALORANT Patch Notes 11.00). Riot's Act Ranks and Rewards page, last updated in May 2025 before that patch, still says Ascendant 1. Immortal and Radiant are only reachable by climbing.

Timing matters too. Act 5 of Season 2026 is expected to end on October 13 or 14, and Act 6 is a one-placement Act for anyone already ranked. The next five-placement reset is Season 2027's first Act in January. Our Act 5 end date and Act 6 rank reset guide has the details. If you start a new account now, four-hour days reach 20 before Act 5 ends and an hour a day lands in early Act 6. Either way, an account that has never been ranked plays five placement games.

Can You Play Duo Ranked Right After Level 20?

Yes, within Riot's party limits. Groups of two or three have tier restrictions, five-stacks have none but take reduced RR, and four-player groups can't queue (Riot Games Support: Competitive Mode FAQ). The full table is in our guide to which Valorant ranks can duo together.

Riot's Rules on Leveling and Boosting

Riot tightened its rules on rank manipulation in 2026. Patch 13.01 brought new detection tools, building on systems Riot introduced in League of Legends, with penalties that include suspensions, rank reversals and removed ranked rewards (VALORANT Patch Notes 13.01). Those penalties are written for ranked play, but Riot's Terms of Service cover the whole account, including the unrated games that earn account level. A service that plays on your account isn't outside Riot's rules just because no ranked game is involved.

If you're weighing paid help, read Riot's Terms of Service and our breakdown of what each service format involves, and which ones need your login first. We won't call any format risk-free.

Level 20, Placements and Your First Rank on Pairly

If you'd rather spend those hours climbing than leveling, Valorant Account Leveling takes an account to level 20 or any level you pick, Solo or Duo, with the price and estimated completion time shown before you pay. The step after it is covered too: Valorant Placements plays the placement games that follow level 20. Both are paid services that play on or with your account, and neither is outside Riot's rules or risk-free. Read Riot's Terms of Service before you order.

Valorant Level 20 FAQ

How long does it take to get level 20 in Valorant?

About 17 days and 17 hours of matches if you play an hour of Spike Rush a day and bank the daily first win. Four-hour sessions finish in 8 days but take about 30 hours; one Unrated game a day takes 34 days. With no daily win bonus, match time alone is about 49 hours.

How much XP do you need for level 20 in Valorant?

Each level costs 5,000 Account Points. From level 1 to 20 that's 95,000 AP. Account level uses AP, which is separate from Battle Pass XP.

What is the fastest way to level up in Valorant?

Get your first win of the day every day. It's worth 5,000 AP at levels 0 to 5, a full level. Short modes like Spike Rush and Swiftplay get you that win sooner per hour played.

Do you level up faster in Spike Rush or Unrated?

The wiki lists one time-AP rate for every matchmade mode. Spike Rush levels you faster in practice because you play more games, and win more, per hour. Unrated is the better practice for ranked.

Does account level affect your rank or MMR?

No. Account level only tracks time played. Your rank comes from your Competitive results after placements.

Can I buy Valorant level 20?

Pairly's Valorant Account Leveling takes an account to level 20 or a level you choose, Solo or Duo, with the price and estimated time shown before you pay. Read Riot's rules and our service formats breakdown before you decide. No paid format is risk-free under Riot's rules.
